QualificationsThere are no minimum qualifications required for tax return preparers. From independent tax preparers to the largest tax preparation chains, anyone may legally prepare taxes for pay. So how do you choose one?
Fortunately, certain institutions have established guidelines for tax professionals. Three professional designations exist: Attorney, Certified Public Accountant, and Enrolled Agent. All must pass rigorous exams, complete yearly continuing education, and maintain professional standards of conduct. All may be disbarred for misconduct, ending their careers. Unlicensed tax preparers may be capable. But, only the three designations noted above ensure an established level of competency. In addition to holding the Enrolled Agent designation, I hold a BS in Accounting as well as an additional BA and MSc. I state this not to brag, but to demonstrate my commitment to excellence. The same commitment I put to work for my clients, and at a cost that is remarkably competitive. |
